5 penny-pinching movie characters - The Washington Post

There are plenty of movie characters who would very much enjoy this special Free Issue of Weekend Pass — thrifty folks who can pinch a penny so hard Lincoln starts screaming. After all, if you watch your pennies, the dollars will add up.

Cinderella: There’s no point in buying a new gown you’re only going to wear once. After remaking an old dress with the help of bird- and mouse-based labor, Cinderella turns to every cheapskate’s favorite friend: a wealthy, previously unheard-of relative.

The Joad Family: Sometimes small changes like skipping your daily Starbucks can make a big financial difference. And sometimes, like in “The Grapes of Wrath,” you have to move from Dust Bowl Oklahoma to California in an attempt not to starve to death.

Oliver Twist: If you’re having trouble making rent, getting a roommate might be a good idea. So that means having a few dozen pickpocketing, prepubescent roommates is an even BETTER idea.

Grandpa Joe et al.: In “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” Charlie’s family saves money by all sharing a bed. A better strategy might be to get a job rather than touring a candy manufacturer, but whatever.

The Lone Prospector: In the Chaplin classic “The Gold Rush,” the prospector shows how you save money by eating at home rather than at a restaurant. He also shows how you save money by eating a shoe rather than actual food.
